When I do character design, most of the time I use sharpie for outline and colored pencils to colorize it. It's usually faster but I sometimes colorize intricate ballpen/sharpie shaded images with colored pencils. Occasionally, I combine these with graphite pencils. Other times I experiment. I still return to waxes from time to time.
